Boudinot, Elias (c. 1803–1839)

Cherokee writer and leader. The first editor of the Cherokee Phoenix, 1828–34, he was murdered by other Cherokee for his support of Cherokee land cessions. He is also known for his translation of religious tracts, including the New Testament of the Bible, into Cherokee.

Scholars Beckett (1934), Gabriel (1941), Martin (1947), Malone (1950), Holland (1956), Perdue (1977), Leubke (1972, 1979, 1981), and Riley (1976, 1979) provided exhaustive studies of the Phoenix and its famous editor, Elias Boudinot.
Elias Boudinot was the first editor and Reverend Samuel Worcester, a missionary, was director.
