Elista

Capital of the Kalmyk Republic, in the far southwestern Russian Federation, 310 km/193 mi west of Astrakhan; population (1994) 93,000. Elista has industries producing building materials and food. A sanatorium is located nearby.

Elista was founded in 1927 as administrative centre of the Kalmyk Autonomous Oblast. Kalmyk autonomy was abolished by Stalin in 1944, and for 13 years the republic and its capital were absorbed into Stavropol krai (territory).

The second monument--in Elista, the capital of Kalmykia--commemorates the deportation of Kalmyk women, children and old people in 1944--during which over 11,000 died.

So officials were surprised in December 1988 to learn of two positive tests in the small city of Elista near the Caspian Sea, where no AIDS cases had ever been seen.
