The second monument--in Elista, the capital of Kalmykia--commemorates the deportation of Kalmyk women, children and old people in 1944--during which over 11,000 died. Anatoly Karpov became the International Chess Federation's world champion Thursday when he and Gata Kamsky agreed to a draw in Game 18 of their match in Elista, Russia. So officials were surprised in December 1988 to learn of two positive tests in the small city of Elista near the Caspian Sea, where no AIDS cases had ever been seen. |
