Elizabeth City

Town and administrative headquarters of Pasquotank County, northeast North Carolina; population (2000) 17,200. It is situated on the Pasquotank River estuary, a north arm of Albemarle Sound, and part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Elizabeth City is now a busy maritime city, with diversified industries, including lumber and shipyards. A large Coast Guard base and airfield are to the southeast of the town. It is home to Elizabeth City State University (1891), the College of Albemarle (1960), and Roanoke Bible College.

Elizabeth City was settled in the mid 17th century. Following the completion of the Dismal Swamp Canal in 1790, trade with the West Indies flourished.
