Elizabeth Islands

Island chain, constituting the town of Gosnold in Dukes County, southeast Massachusetts; total area of 36 sq km/14 sq mi; population (1990) 100. The 16 islands, the largest of which are Naushon and Nashawena, run southwest for 24 km/15 mi from the southwest tip of Cape Cod, with Buzzards Bay to the north and Vineyard Sound to the south. Their population consists mostly of summer residents.

Tradition says Leif Eriksson sailed in these waters, but the first definite European landing was by Bartholomew Gosnold in 1602.

There is a coast guard station on Cuttyhunk, the outermost island.
