Elizabethton

Town and administrative headquarters of Carter County, extreme east Tennessee; population (1990) 11,900. It is situated in Happy Valley on the Watauga and Doe rivers, 13 km/8 mi east-northeast of Johnson City. The town's industries produce rayon and aluminium products, chemicals, and piano strings. There are manganese deposits, and the river and nearby Watauga and Boone lakes, formed by Tennessee Valley Authority dams, provide recreational facilities.

Elizabethton was among the first permanent white settlements in Tennessee. An independent, democratic government, the Watauga Association, was organized here in 1772.
