Elk City

Town in Beckham County, west Oklahoma; population (1990) 10,400. It is situated on Elk Creek, 185 km/110 mi west of Oklahoma City. In the late 19th century, it was a resting spot for cattle drives from Texas to Kansas. It thrived with the discovery of oil (1947), and when reserves were depleted in the late 1960s, refocused on natural gas. The city is also a commercial centre for agricultural and dairy producers. Its manufactures include furniture.
