Elkhart

City in Elkhart County, north Indiana, USA, 28 km/17 mi east of South Bend, where the Elkhart River meets the St Joseph River; population (2000) 51,900. Its factories produce mobile homes, firefighting apparatus, recreational vehicles, and pharmaceuticals. The manufacture of band instruments, begun by Charles Conn in 1875, continues to be important; a large proportion of all brass instruments produced in the USA are made here.

Elkhart was laid out in 1832 and incorporated as a city in 1875.
