Elkin, Stanley Lawrence (1930– )

US writer and educator. An academic, he joined the English faculty of Washington University, St Louis. His many short stories make use of elusive plots and allusive language. Stanley Elkin's Greatest Hits (1980) is a collection of his shorter works.

He was born in New York City and gained his PhD from the University of Illinois. He served in the US Army and taught at several colleges before going to Washington University. His publications include Boswell (1964), George Mills (1982), and The Magic Kingdom (1985).
