Elko

Town and administrative headquarters of Elko County, northeast Nevada; population (2000) 16,700. It is situated on the Humboldt River. The town is a trade and distribution centre for a cattle and sheep raising area. Local mining and tourism are also important to its economy. Elko is headquarters for the Humboldt National Forest, and is known for its annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering and National Basque Festival.

Elko dates from 1868, when it served as a construction camp for the Central Pacific Railroad, it was used as a supply point for westward-bound settlers. The town's prosperity has recently been influenced by its proximity to Carlin, site of a flourishing gold mine, 32 km/20 mi to the west-southwest.
