Ellensburg

Town and administrative headquarters of Kittitas County, central Washington; population (2000) 15,400. It is situated on the Yakima River, 40 km/25 mi north of Yakima. It is a commercial centre for surrounding coal mining towns and, since the Yakima Reclamation Project, an important trading and processing hub for cattle and the agricultural products of its irrigated river valley. Lumbering is also important. Ellensburg is home to Central Washington University (1891).

The town's annual rodeo is one of the largest in the country. Ginkgo Petrified Forest and State Park, sources of ‘Ellensburg Blue’ agate, are 40 km/25 mi to the east.
