Ellerman, John Reeves (1862-1933)

British ship owner, financier, and newspaper proprietor. Early in his career he joined the board of Frederick Leyland's company, the first unit of what eventually developed into the Ellerman group. This group, registered as the London, Liverpool and Ocean Shipping Co., included the Paypayanni, City, Hall, Westcott, and Laurence, among other shipping lines. In 1913 it acquired the share capital of Bucknall's Steamship Lines, the name of which was changed in 1914 to Ellerman and Bucknall Steamship Company. Ellerman was also chairman of Ellerman's Wilson Line. He left a fortune of £30 million. He was made a baronet in 1905 and Companion of Honour in 1921.
