Ellicott City

Town and administrative headquarters of Howard County, north-central Maryland; population (1990) 41,400. It is situated on the Patapsco River, 19 km/12 mi west of Baltimore. It developed from Ellicott's Mills, a small town built around the gristmill of three Quaker brothers in the late 1700s. In 1830 the first section of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad was opened, and the community became a residential and business suburb. It is now primarily residential, with a number of preserved Colonial homes.
