Elliot Lake

Town in Algoma District, central Ontario, Canada; population (1991) 14,100. It is situated on Elliot Lake, 134 km/83 mi east-southeast of Sault Ste Marie. It was established in 1954 as a planned community, following the discovery of uranium ore in the area. One of the world's largest uranium producing districts, it has experienced cycles of expansion and contraction tied to fluctuating demand. In an area with some 170 lakes, it is also a resort.
