Ellmann, Richard

Ellmann, Richard (1918–1987)

US literary critic and educator. A scholar of 19th- and 20th-century Irish literature, he lectured widely and taught at Northwestern and Oxford Universities. He wrote definitive biographies of James Joyce (1959) and Oscar Wilde (1987).

He was born in Highland Park, Michigan.
