Ellsworth

Town and administrative headquarters of Hancock County, southeast Maine; population (2000) 6,500. It is situated near the falls of the Union River, just above Union River Bay of the Atlantic Ocean, and 40 km/25 mi southeast of Bangor. It is the retail centre and gateway to Acadia National Park and the Mount Desert region. The town's leading manufactures are wood products, boats, and woollen goods. Much of the business district was rebuilt after a 1933 fire.
