Elmhurst

Town in Du Page County, northeast Illinois; population (1990) 42,000. It is located 22 km/14 mi west of Chicago. A mainly residential community, with a light industrial park, it was founded in 1836. The coming of the railroad (1849) brought an influx of German loggers. Today local quarries supply limestone for cut stone and cement block industries. It is home to Elmhurst College (1871) and the Lizzardro Museum of Lapidary Arts.
