Elmira

City in south-central New York State, USA, on the Chemung River, 80 km/50 mi west of Binghamton, just south of the Finger Lakes region; seat of Chemung County; population (2000) 30,900. It is the processing and marketing centre for the area's dairy and poultry farms. Other industries include business machinery, machine parts, aeroplanes, and fire engines.

Elmira was first settled as Newtown in 1788, renamed in 1828, and incorporated as a city in 1864. Elmira College (1855), one of the first women's colleges, is located here, and preserves the study of the writer Mark Twain, who is buried here.
