Elphin

Market town in County Roscommon, Republic of Ireland, 29 km/18 mi north of Roscommon; population (2002) 700. Elphin has an important place in Irish church history since St Patrick founded a bishopric here.

The pre-Norman and medieval religious buildings were later destroyed and the bishopric transferred to Sligo town. The poet Oliver Goldsmith attended Elphin Diocesan School.
