Elsah

Town in Jersey County, southwest Illinois; population (1990) 2,500. It is situated on the Mississippi River, opposite Missouri, and 16 km/10 mi northwest of Alton. It was an important 19th-century steamboat stopping point, and is home to Principia College (1898). Pere Marquette State Park is 16 km/10 mi to the west.
