Elton

Shallow salt lake in Volgograd oblast (region) of the Russian Federation, 12 km/7 mi west of the border with Kazakhstan. Elton lies in a tectonic (resulting from distortion of the earth's crust due to forces within it) depression, with its surface almost 15 m/49 ft below sea-level. The lake area fluctuates between 152–200 sq km/59–77 sq mi. Salt is extracted from the lake in large quantities for commercial use.
