Eluard, Paul (1895-1952)

French poet. He expressed the suffering of poverty in his verse, and was a leader of the surrealists (see surrealism). He fought in World War I, which inspired his Poèmes pour la paix/Poems for Peace (1918), and was a member of the Resistance in World War II. His books include Poésie et vérité/Poetry and Truth (1942) and Au Rendezvous allemand/To the German Rendezvous (1944).

Among his earlier books of poems are Capitale de la douleur/Capital of Sorrow 1926, L'Amour, la poésie/Love, Poetry 1929, La Vie immédiate/Immediate Life 1932, La Rose publique/The Public Rose 1934, and Les Yeux fertiles/Fertile Eyes 1936.
