Elway, John (1960– )

US American footballer. As quarterback he led the Denver Broncos to Super Bowl triumphs in 1998 and 1999. Born in Port Angeles, Washington, he joined the Broncos in 1983 after an outstanding career with Stanford. He passed for 3,000 or more yards for seven successive seasons 1985–91, but during this period the Broncos suffered three Super Bowl defeats. In 1998 he became the second quarterback in National Football League history to exceed 50,000 yards in career passing. He retired as a player in May 1999.
