Elwell, Herbert (1898–1974)

US composer. He studied with Ernest Bloch in New York and with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. He was head of composition at the Cleveland Institute 1928–45, and teacher at Oberlin Conservatory from 1946.

The Happy Hypocrite (1925).

Orchestral

Introduction and Allegro for orchestra (1942).

Vocal

I Was With Him, cantata (1937); Blue Symphony for voice and string quartet (1944); Lincoln: Requiem Aeternam (1946).

Chamber

two string quartets; piano sonata.
