Elwood

Town in Madison County, central Indiana; population (1990) 9,500. It is located 61 km/38 mi northeast of Indianapolis. Its growth was precipitated by a natural gas boom in 1887 and the introduction of sheet metal and window glass industries. Today's manufactures include speciality glass items, machine tools, wire and cable, and electronic components. In a tomato growing area, Elwood also has major canning facilities.
