Emba

River of Central Asia, 612 km/380 mi long, that rises in the Mugodzhar Hills in western Kazakhstan and drains into the northern part of the Caspian Sea. Its largely southwesterly course passes through dry steppe, semi-desert, and desert zones, and there are important oilfields in its basin. It freezes over from November to April.
