Ethernet

In computing, the most popular protocol for local area networks. Ethernet was developed principally by the Xerox Corporation, but is now used on most computers. It originally allowed data transfer at rates up to 10 Mbps, but 100-Mbps Fast Ethernet – often called 100Base-T – is now in widespread use while the first product versions are now available of 10 Gigabit Ethernet and discussions are under way to agree a 100 Gigabit Ethernet standard.

Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet are all IEEE standards.
