Emden| Port in Lower Saxony, Germany, at the mouth of the River Ems; population (1995) 51,600. It is a fishing port and an export outlet for the industries of the Ruhr district in North Rhine-Westphalia, with which it is connected by the Dortmund–Ems Canal. There are oil refineries here. |
| Nearby is the landing point for the Norpipe system, which brings Norwegian natural gas ashore from the Sleipner, Heimdal, and Troll fields. The Emden terminal pipes large quantities of natural gas to the heart of Germany in the Rhinelands and south to Bavaria. |
Emden| German light cruiser of World War I. It was mainly used as a ‘commerce raider’ in the Indian and Pacific oceans, and sank several merchant ships. Its captain, von Müller, became renowned for his humanity in providing for the safety and survival of the crews of the ships he sank. The Emden was itself sunk by the Australian HMAS Sydney 9 November 1914. Although 230 of the crew were lost, Capt von Müller was among the survivors. |
