He broke 13 world long-distance records between 1948 and 1954, winning the gold medal for the 10,000-metre world record of 28 minutes 54.2 seconds 1949.

He was deprived of his rank of colonel after voicing his opposition to the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia 1968, and later involved himself with the work of the Czech national sports institute.

Our education really began in 1948 when a Czech army officer named Emil Zatopek won the Olympic 10,000-meter gold medal in record time and was hailed as a potential world-breaker in everything from the 5000m run to the marathon.
The special also recalls a French distance runner named Alain Mimoun who finished second to Czechoslovakia's Emil Zatopek in three consecutive Olympic races and finally beat him in 1956.
