Eminescu, Mihail (1850–1889)

Romanian poet. His work gave a new richness to the Romanian language, as in the lyrical ballad ‘Luceǎfarul/Evening Star’ 1883, and he is considered the country's greatest poet. His passion for history and folklore is also reflected in his verse.

He joined the literary circle Junimea (‘youth’), contributing poems to its journal Convorbiri literare. In 1887 he became editor of the newspaper Timpul.
