Sharjah

Third-largest of the seven member states of the United Arab Emirates, situated on the Gulf northeast of Dubai; area 2,600 sq km/1,004 sq mi; population (2004 est) 556,000. Since 1952 it has included the small state of Kalba. In 1974 oil was discovered offshore. Industries include ship repair, cement, paint, and metal products.
