Emmerich

City in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, 79 km/49 mi northwest of Düsseldorf, on the right bank of the River Rhine close to the Dutch border; population (1995) 29,300. Food, chemicals, and machinery are manufactured.

The longest suspension bridge in Germany (1,228 m/4,029 ft) spans the Rhine at Emmerich.

Emmerich was the site of a major crosing of the River Rhine in the Allied offensive of 1945. The town was almost completely destroyed (93%) by bombing and in the fighting, so that it lost its ancient character and medieval churches were reduced to ruins.
