Emmitsburg

Town in Frederick County, north Maryland; population (1990) 1,700. It is located 32 km/20 mi north of Frederick, near the Pennsylvania state line. It is home to Mount St Mary's College and Seminary (1808), the oldest independent Catholic college in the USA. Elizabeth Ann Seton, founder of the Roman Catholic Sisters of Charity and the first US woman saint, is buried in the town's Chapel of St Joseph's College (1809).
