Akihito (1933– )Emperor of Japan from 1989, succeeding his father Hirohito (Shōwa). His reign is called the Heisei (‘achievement of universal peace’) era. Unlike previous crown princes, Akihito was educated alongside commoners at the elite Gakushuin school and in 1959 he married Michiko Shoda (1934– ), the daughter of a flour-company president. Their three children, the Oxford University-educated Crown Prince Hiro, Prince Aya, and Princess Nori, were raised at Akihito's home instead of being reared by tutors and chamberlains in a separate imperial dormitory. GOVERNMENT: Emperor Akihito is the ceremonial head of state. In 1996 Emperor Akihito awarded her Japan's highest civilian honor, The Sacred Treasure Gold Rays. In the hubbub of protests and outrage that followed, no one seemed to have noted what Koizumi said in a statement issued that day and repeated again in the presence of Emperor Akihito during ceremonies on the August 15 anniversary. |
