Emperor Jones

Opera by Louis Gruenberg (libretto by K de Jaffa, based on Eugene O'Neill's play), first produced at the New York Metropolitan Opera House on 7 January 1933. It tells the story of an escaped convict, Brutus Jones, who a rules Caribbean island, exploiting the locals until they rebel against him and he commits suicide.

Besides its avant-garde staging techniques, The Emperor Jones was also notable as the first American play to cast black actors.
She appeared with Paul Robeson in the 1933 film The Emperor Jones and was handpicked by George Gershwin to create the role of Serena in the original version of Porgy and Bess.
Some may even have seen the two very fine commercial tapes of Limon dancing in his works The Moor's Pavane and Emperor Jones.
