Empire Windrush

Ship that brought some 500 West Indian immigrants to Britain, docking at Tilbury in June 1948. This was the first of many waves of Caribbean immigrants to arrive in post-war Britain, which was in need of workers to help rebuild the economy. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the arrival of Empire Windrush, the BBC in summer 1998 ran a series of programmes under the umbrella title Windrush.
