industrial tribunalIndependent panel that rules on disputes between employers and employees or trade unions relating to statutory terms and conditions of employment. Employment issues brought before it include unfair dismissal, redundancy, equal opportunities, and discrimination at work. The panel is made up of a lawyer, a union representative, and a management representative. The tribunal proceedings are meant to be informal so that anyone, whether worker, small businessperson, or large employer, can present his or her own case without necessarily involving lawyers and the accompanying costs.
