Gmail

Web-based e-mail service launched by Google in 2006. It was the first Web mail service to offer users 1GB of storage space. Google continued to lead its main competitors with the amount of storage provided, and in 2007 g-mail provided 2.8GB of free storage.

Gmail is one of the top four e-mail services, along with Microsoft Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, and AOL Mail. Gmail offers a simple user interface with less advertising than some of its competitors. It is a free service, funded by advertising revenues, and uses a system called ‘Adwords’ to display text-only adverts that are selected as being relevant to the content of users' e-mail messages.

As well as providing e-mail for browsers and mobile phones, Gmail offers a built-in text chat facility, and in 2007 introduced a Google Talk service which enables free computer-to-computer voice calls to be made.
