Japanese encephalitis| In medicine, a disease carried by mosquitoes, which can be fatal. A vaccine is available but it is not given routinely as the disease is confined to remote areas of the world seldom visited by international travellers. Annually, 15,000 people die of Japanese encephalitis worldwide (1998), a quarter of all those infected. Brain damage results in 50% of infections. |
