Encinitas

Town in San Diego County, southwest California; population (1990) 55,400. It is located 37 km/23 mi north-northwest of San Diego, on the Pacific Ocean. This affluent suburb is one of the fastest-growing Southern California communities. Its population more than quintupled in the 1980s as it expanded from its beaches back into what historically has been a fruit growing area. Cardiff-by-the-Sea is to the south.
