Engadine

Upper valley of the River Inn in Graubünden canton, Switzerland, a winter sports resort. The valley is divided into the Upper and Lower Engadine, the capital of the Upper being Samaden, and of the Lower, Schuls. The Upper Engadine contains several lakes and health resorts, including the winter sports centre of St Moritz, known since the 16th century for its mineral waters.

A road passes through the valley from the Maloja Pass (1,810 m/5,938 ft) in the southwest to Martinsbruck (1,038 m/3,405 ft) in the northeast on the Austrian border, a distance of some 90 km/56 mi. The Swiss National Park, an area of 140 sq km/54 sq mi, is in the Lower Engadine. The local architecture is distinctive, with large stone farmhouses decorated with wall paintings, and the windows have iron grilles. The language spoken is Ladin (an old Romansch dialect) or Swiss-German.
