Engel, (Johann) Carl Ludwig (1778-1840)

German architect. From 1815 he worked in Finland. His great neoclassical achievement is the Senate Square in Helsinki, which is defined by his Senate House (1818-22) and University Building (1828-32), and crowned by the domed Lutheran cathedral (1830-40).
