Engel, (Johann) Carl Ludwig (1778–1840)
German architect. From 1815 he worked in Finland. His great neoclassical achievement is the Senate Square in Helsinki, which is defined by his Senate House (1818–22) and University Building (1828–32), and crowned by the domed Lutheran cathedral (1830–40).
