Englishry

Legal term used to denote those not of Norman stock after the Norman conquest of England 1066. A person's ethnic status would determine, for example, how they were treated by courts: murder cases in which the victim was English were deemed to be less serious than those in which the victim was a Norman. The term also applied to those areas, especially the low-lying areas in the Marches of Wales, where ‘English’, meaning Anglo-Norman, customs prevailed over Welsh law.
