Englund, (Sven) Einar (1916-1999)

Finnish composer. His music is influenced by Sibelius and Shostakovich. He taught at the Sibelius Academy, and was best known for his symphonic works.

He studied with Selim Palmgren in Helsinki and with Aaron Copland at Tanglewood.

Works

Orchestral

seven symphonies (1946-88), cello concerto (1954), two piano concertos (1955, 1974), concerto for 12 cellos (1981), violin concerto (1981), serenade for strings (1983), flute concerto (1985).

Chamber

piano trio (1982), string quartet (1985), suite for cello, The Last Island (1986).
