Enna

Winter resort town and capital of Enna province, central Sicily, 100 km/62 mi southeast of Palermo; population (2001 est) 28,600. Its economy is based heavily on the service industries, particularly in the public sector. At almost 1,000 m/3,280 ft above sea level, Enna is the highest provincial capital in Italy, and from its hilltop site commands extensive views. The ruined medieval castle was one of the largest in Sicily, containing fortifications by most of the island's occupying powers. There is a 13th–17th-century cathedral with a baroque facade.

The ruined castle is the site of a temple of Demeter, Greek goddess of agriculture; nearby Lake Pergusa is associated with the myth of her daughter Persephone.
