Enniscorthy

Market town in County Wexford, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 3,800. It is situated on the River Slaney, 23 km/14 mi northwest of Wexford town, and across the river from Vinegar Hill, the site of the main rebel camp during the Rebellion of 1798 against the British. Below Enniscorthy the river is navigable for barges. Enniscorthy Castle dates from 1586; it is a square keep erected on the site of a 13th-century castle. It was used as a prison after the Rebellion of 1798, and is now a museum.
