Entebbe

City in Uganda, on the northwest shore of Lake Victoria, 20 km/12 mi southwest of Kampala, the capital; 1,136 m/3,728 ft above sea level; population (2002 est) 57,500. Founded in 1893, it was the administrative centre of Uganda 1894–1962. The international airport of Uganda is here. Industries include tourism and fishing.

In 1976 a French aircraft was hijacked by a Palestinian liberation group. It was flown to Entebbe airport, where the hostages on board were rescued six days later by Israeli troops.
