enterprise resource planning

Business management system that integrates all aspects of a business. ERP systems are comprised of integrated databases and software applications covering sales, finances, quality control, accounting, manufacturing, production scheduling, logistics, human resources, customer services, and all other enterprise functions. ERP has been extended to manage the entire value chain from supplier to customer; this is known as supply chain management.

Software companies providing ERP systems include the Dutch firm Baan, SAP of Germany, and the US companies Oracle, J D Edwards, and PeopleSoft. As well as Web-enabling their systems, ERP vendors are extending them into customer relationship management and supply chain planning, in some cases through partnerships with suppliers in those areas.
