Opera by Mozart (libretto by C F Bretzner [Belmont und Constanze] altered by G Stephanie, junior), first produced at the Burgtheater, Vienna, Austria, on 16 July 1782. In the story, Constanze resists the amorous Pasha Selim, who keeps her locked up. Belmonte (her true lover) and Pedrillo attempt to rescue her but are caught. The Europeans expect execution but are shown mercy by the Pasha.
