Entre Ríos

Province in northeast Argentina, the name of which derives from its position between two rivers, the Paraná and the Uruguay; area 78,781 sq km/30,417 sq mi; population (1996) 1,020,257. The capital of Entre Ríos is Paraná. Geographically and economically, it forms part of the Pampas region and is one of the chief cattle-raising areas in Argentina. It is a low, fertile alluvial area with a humid, sub-tropical climate. Maize, flax, rice, and fruit are the main crops. The region's economy is based on fishing, timber, gypsum- and sand-mining, and meat-packing. There is also a growing tourist industry. The land is gently undulating, very similar to that of Uruguay, from which it is separated by the River Uruguay.
